It's ok. Akiko is at the blue skies gallery. I am here. My lecture went pretty well yesterday, I think. why are we all getting so old? Why is my father old? Is this the way he wanted it? If I have one white parent, and and one black parent, am I white, or am I black? We have a caste system in America, but we just don't know it. Oh I'm so happy I went to Japan a couple of times. Japan is a "monoculture", and that's whats good about it. In America we value diversity, but diversity is not always good. Part of the value of America is the fact the we debate things among differing factions. A lot of that difference also comes from differing cultures. Sure it's good to have debate, but sometimes it's nice to agree right? In Japan I see agreement, because of the so called monoculture. I like that too. If the Japanese government says, "lets recycle" , the people recycle. There is no debate. The people do it. In America people say "recycle my ass", "recycle these nuts", etc. It's harder for people to get with the program. Independence is sometimes a problem. In America we want to debate about everything before taking action. I think that's because we have so many different cultures and backgrounds represented. Don't get me wrong: debate is good sometimes; but some things need less debate, and less resistance; like recycling. Put the recycling in one can, and put the non recyclables in another. It's that simple. Americans don't seem to get that; so if you put a recycling bin outside of Farm Fresh, next to the regular bin; how many people would differentiate between the recycling bin and the regular bin? How many people would even care? It's "the American way". Individual choice: sometimes good, and sometimes bad. Sometimes when people are in "lockstep" like the Germans (well, many of them) were in ww2, things get done; admittedly, whether good or bad. In that case it was bad; but it all shows the power of the "monoculture". In America we pride ourselves on diversity; we pride ourselves on debate, and reasoning together, as the bible says "come let us reason together" (Isaiah 1:18). "Reasoning" is great; but so is agreement; harmony. In Japan there is no need to "reason" certain things out. It's a forgone conclusion: we will recycle. When standing at the public subway there is one can for recycling, and one can for regular trash. People make the right decision. They are not so "individualistic" as to not give a damn which goes where.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' I bought a bottle of wine today, and two cd's from the thrift store. One classical, and one Bob Dylan Bootleg. Lately I have been into Bjork, because I found her cd Homogenic at the Thrift Store. I kept it around for a while, because I was uncertain as to weather it ws good.; but when, hard pressed for music, I finally listened to it; well I was impressed, and listed to it day after day after day on repeat. I never grow tired of it. Perhaps some day I will, and I do have disagreements with the production in a very few places; but they are so very few; and with such and assault on convention, of course there will be such things right? Oh well, I will sleep now.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1911728498831395266-8243257343250878016?l=danieljoelgoodwinart.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>

goofy loopy

watching "Lonliness of the Long Distance Runner"; a black and white, kind od artsy film from the 60's in England; but well done; about working class youth. Still struggling with the artist statement for a thesis idea. Trying to view the MFA as yest another art project; one that requires a lot of paperwork, and research. I'm afraid if I look too deeply into myself I might find that I'm a fraud, a fake; and I really don't deserve to be an artist at all. Maybe all artists are fakes, phonies. What do we really contribute. The artist statement seems to require putting oneself into a box. Isn't that delightful. Are musicians and writers required to so put themselves into boxes? I don't think so; but as students we must defend our validity against more "important" endeavors, such as science, and literature. It would be funny if a football player had to write a thesis about football before he could graduate; but then football is considered merely extracurricular; no need to write about it. The writing part is the most despicable part of the graduate experience. I love to write, but I don't know what to say about my art. I have no idea where to satrt. I could say so many things. Basically I want to make something that looks good, the same way thelonious Monk simply wanted to make something that "sounded good". Then again, there are certain ideas and opinions I want to put across, but they're not always in the same piece; and that's the problem. But I guess once I create a body of work that can be presented along with the written graduate thesis, and the two match up; that is, I have limited my writing to a specific body of work, I will be ok; like writing about the mating habits of the South American fruitfly. It's just so hard to limit myself in that way, to find that kind of focus: the interaction of different clay bodies with the use of tiles, is one thing I've thought of; contrasts of materrials: clay v.s. glass v.s. metal. vis. cement Contrasting clay bodies. A kind of "materials study". It was really crowded, I was way in the back, and really drunk, and a guy tried to pick a fight with me after the show. It kind of left a bad taste in my mouth about the Mouse; not that it was their fault I was drunk. I just got to see some of the ugliness of concerts at times. Plus they didn't play some of my favorite songs, but instead played crappy songs from their new albums. Oh well, on the good side my art is coming along quite well. I feel that I've really made some strides in the last two years. I feeel that I'm starting to find my way. I will add more art to my blog soon.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1'
